Draw It - Spelling Game

Materials

• Spelling list
• Paper
• Pencil
• Crayons

Instructions

This activity focuses on vocabulary, as well as spelling. Often, spelling words and vocabulary words are assigned as one list, but, ideally, this should not be the case. Spelling lists should target specific patterns, rules, and exceptions, while vocabulary lists should build subject competencies and expand word-level knowledge. However, activities like this can help reinforce both. It can be important for students, particularly those learning English as a second language, to assign meaning to the words they are learning to spell. This activity integrates those skills, as well as art.

1. Choose a spelling word.
2. Draw a picture that shows the meaning of the word.
3. Where in the picture can you fit one of the letters from the word? Add the letter in.
4. Around that letter, complete the word.
